Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa has appointed a six member Health Services Board. Chaired by veteran medical practitioner and former director of Health Services in Harare, Dr Lovemore Mbengeranwa, the board is tasked with ensuring that all the country’s healthcare facilities are adequately staffed with medical specialists.
“We have a shortage of specialists at our health institutions across the country. The newly appointed board must facilitate the decentralisation of specialists to all centres,” Dr Parirenyatwa said.
It was important for the new board to explore ways of offering incentives to improve conditions of service that will attract specialists to work in remote parts of the country.
The new board was appointed at a time the sector was facing serious challenges related to shortages of health specialists, under-staffing at clinics and hospitals, deteriorating healthcare infrastructure, lack of laboratory equipment and poor service conditions for health professionals.
Dr Mbengeranwa said his board would work with respective hospital management boards to ensure quality service delivery.
Other members of the board include former secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Elizabeth Xaba, social welfare expert Mrs Eben Mangwende, Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Mrs Regina Smith, veteran nurse and former West End Hospital matron Mrs Tendai Watungwa, and former Attorney General Mr Sobusa Gula-Ndebele.
