Minister calls for child protection against cyber crimes

MINISTER of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Dr Tatenda Matevera, has called for a collaborative effort between the Government and other stakeholders in protecting children from online abuse and cyber crimes.

While she applauded the positive impact of technology, the Minister said it was urgent to create a safe online environment that shields children from potential harm.

“Online spaces have revolutionised communication education in the country, but the negative impact of technologies cannot be overlooked and affect children.

“On social media platforms, children are exposing themselves by posting their identities, locations and images. All this information can be taken advantage of by unscrupulous people who are targeting these young children.

“Children can become the target and victims of pornography, kidnapping, rape, deception, drug mules or even child trafficking by adult predators or cyber criminals.

“Therefore, the government must protect children from online abuse and to effectively deal with cybercrimes there is need for collaboration with other stakeholders,” said Minister Matevera.
