LOCAL Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe met traditional chiefs and councillors from Mashonaland West in Chinhoyi on Monday, reaffirming the Government’s strong support for local leadership.

The meeting aimed to discuss the relationship between the two tiers of the local government system and how they can help in the development of Zimbabwe.

In his address to the delegates, Minister Garwe urged both groups to collaborate effectively to help Zimbabwe achieve upper-middle-income economic status by 2030.

“You should work together with the traditional leaders, as outlined in the constitution,” Minister Garwe said.

“Whenever you hold your full council meetings, remember to invite them.”

Minister Garwe assured the traditional chiefs and councillors of President Mnangagwa’s steadfast support.

“The President is concerned about the welfare of traditional leaders, and I would like to mention that in December, he will provide brand new vehicles as promised.”

Senator Chief Ngezi, representing the traditional leaders, expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa for addressing their challenges.

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo emphasised that this engagement creates a necessary platform for dialogue to help build the nation.

Hurungwe Rural District Council chairperson and Zanu PF provincial chair, Cde Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, highlighted the importance of engaging companies operating in the province to give back to society.
