ACTING City of Harare water distribution manager, Engineer Charles Chinyanya, said the first phase of the pipe replacement project will cover 106 kilometres, which will be replaced in the next year.

In an interview at Helcraw Water offices on Monday, after viewing the water pipes procured by the company, Eng Chinyanya said the stocks are already in place.

“And the project continues because this marriage is there for the next 25 years,” he said.

Eng Chinyanya said the pipes are in various sizes, starting from 15mm, which connect the meter itself and from one’s property, the pipes and as they go into water reticulation, the sizes become bigger.

He said the city has recommended PVC pipes as it is the standard the world over.

“All along the city had larger quantities of AC pipes (asbestos) cement, which are short in length and a bit heavier and can cause asbestosis, which is a health hazard to residents.

“These pipes have outlived their lifespan, and it’s time for pipe replacement.”
