STUDENT exchange programmes are essential in enhancing regional military cooperation as countries confront increasingly complex and transnational security threats, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri made the remarks in a speech delivered on her behalf by Defence Permanent Secretary Mr Aaron Nhepera at the graduation of Junior Staff Course Number 41 at Manyame Air Base in Harare yesterday.
Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said the scourge of terrorism in parts of the region, drug and human trafficking, cyber insecurity, cross-border smuggling of goods and minerals, poaching and other environmental challenges, present a common threat for which SADC must seek to acquire the necessary mitigatory capability.
“As a result, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) is disposed to continue strengthening training exchange programmes with other defence forces within the SADC region and beyond,” she said.
Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri stressed the need to remain informed about the rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape, characterised by tension and mistrust, which affects both national and regional security.
“The course was designed to develop the capacity of students within the organisation and the revised syllabus was aimed at equipping trainees with skills and knowledge necessary to perform effectively in the contemporary and dynamic defence and security environment,” she said.
Zambia Air Force Captain Mumba Kapaya Mumba emphasised the importance of military cooperation within SADC, recalling its historical roots in the liberation struggles.
“Military cooperation in the Southern African Development Community is crucial, dating back to our tireless efforts during the liberation struggles,” he said.
Capt Mumba pointed out that Zambia’s earlier independence was not merely a national victory, but a regional one, serving as a training hub for liberation efforts.
He reiterated the necessity of continued collaboration to tackle contemporary challenges to peace and security in the region.
Air Force of Zimbabwe Flight Lieutenant Cecilia Mufukura, who was recognised as the best student, pledged her loyalty to Zimbabwe.
“As militants, we are obliged to serve our nation with integrity, honour, and courage. I am thrilled to have been the best student, and I encourage others that the sky is the limit. Commitment and focus are key,” she said.
