Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere today launched a US$20 000 sports tournament in Makoni West constituency, aimed at combating drug and substance abuse.
The event, held at Chiwetu Primary School, saw teams from 19 Zanu PF party districts receive soccer and netball uniforms, match balls, and sporting equipment.
Dr Muswere emphasized the importance of sporting activities in fighting drug and substance abuse and helping to keep youths occupied.
“We are using sport to fight drug and substance abuse in the constituency. We are starting with football, volleyball, netball and women soccer, for both genders. Every youth will be afforded an opportunity to play from grassroots levels up to the constituency finals,” he said.
The Minister added that champions from the constituency will compete in inter-district games with teams from Makoni Central and Headlands constituencies in Makoni district.
Talent scouts will also be invited to identify promising players.
“These games are an opportunity for youths to mix, interact, and share opportunities. The main aim is to fight drug and substance abuse in our communities.”
Earlier, Dr Muswere officiated at the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Officer Commanding Manicaland Province games, held at Vengere High School in Rusape.
The event was themed “Curbing drug and substance abuse through sport.”
Dr Muswere highlighted the Government’s initiatives to combat drug abuse, including legislation and other interventions.
“The Government, under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership, has put in place measures to tackle this menace, including the Multi-Sectorial Drug and Substance Abuse Plan (2024-2030),” he said.
Officer Commanding ZPCS Manicaland Province, Commissioner Spetosomusa Chinobva said the organization has adopted sport and other activities to educate officers, families, and the community about the dangers of drug and substance abuse.
