THE Minister of Information Communication Technologies, Postal and Courier Services, Cde Supa Mandiwanzira, has urged schools to embrace ICTs to spearhead e-learning.
Speaking at a prize-giving day ceremony held at Nyamauru High School in Mutare’s Dangamvura high-density suburb last Friday, Cde Mandiwanzira said Government was committed to providing computers to schools which are the bedrock of e-learning.
He was the guest of honour at the school he did his secondary education from 1986 to 1989.
Cde Mandiwanzira said more emphasis should be placed on Science and practical subjects as these are key factors in the industrialisation of a developing nation like Zimbabwe.
“These days Government is emphasising the teaching of practical and Science subjects in schools. Practical subjects like agriculture, metalwork, woodwork, and food and nutrition create employers who have the capacity to aid production in future.
As students you must aim to employ people when you go into the world rather than wait to get employed. This is in line with the Zim-Asset objectives of employment creation. “Government has been generous, thanks to the great leadership of President Mugabe that we must restore the ownership of our land to the rightful owners and now that we access to land we need more and more skills to utilise it.
“These are the skills that you are being taught here at Nyamauru. Take those subjects seriously because that is where the future is,” he said. Above all, said Cde Mandiwanzira, ICTs were critical and people must have skills on how to use them. “We must have ICTs as we go into the future. I am very glad that you are focusing on ICTs here,” he said
The school headmaster, Mr Tendai Gwashu, said financial constraints were curtailing a number of development projects which include the building of a hall that will also double up as a community hall.
As a former student, Cde Manziwanzira pledged to continuously support the schools to achieve its development objectives.
