Ministry pledges to transform arts sector

THE Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture has pledged to transform its sectors to become vibrant industries and contribute to the social transformation and integration of Zimbabweans through art. Officially opening the Manicaland Show of Arts (MANISA) annual exhibition held at National Gallery of Zimbabwe, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture, Thokozile Chitepo, said the ministry was currently establishing staff structures and systems in all districts and provinces in the country in order to facilitate creation of opportunities for development and promotion of arts.

“We will provide a wide range of services aimed at facilitating and establishing essential support to enhance the economic value and social contribution of the arts and culture sector to Zimbabwean society.

“The Ministry will liaise with education and training institutions regarding the curriculum for arts and culture.
“This is a collaborative effort where the Ministry of Sports Arts and Culture can assist in identifying the skills and experience required to develop good arts products, entrepreneurs and to promote arts as a business.

Arts and culture products are better promoted through collaboration and strong effective organizations such as product and business associations or promoters,” said Chitepo.

The exhibition which coincided with the gallery’s 15th Anniversary since its inception in 1999 ran under the theme: “Our surroundings – Zvakatikomberedza”.

Benard Marira came out tops in the painting category, while Tatenda Gwarada was the best in the sculptor category. Eliah Mukwakwa and John Pambuka won in the mixed media and crafts categories respectively. All the four winners walked away with $200 each.

Speaking at the same event, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Chris Mushohwe, urged the business community in Manicaland to explore business opportunities that come with Manisa.
