By Thursday, 1 281 school children and 131 teachers had tested positive for Covid-19 since the start of the term at the end of last month, most from boarding secondary schools with infections pinpointed by the enhanced surveillance.

In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare said it and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education had stepped in using the Joint Operational Plan for the Coordinated Prevention and Management of the Covid-19 at all learning institutions.

Most of the reported cases had been mild and not requiring hospitalisation and no fatalities had been reported.

“The Ministry wishes to assure the nation and the affected parents that measures are being taken to safeguard the safety and health of the affected learners.”

The Health Ministry announced a five point programme to minimise the risk of further infections.

Increased Covid-19 testing of all suspected cases on-site.

Isolation and management of all positive cases at the affected schools.

Quarantine of the all learners that have been exposed at their schools.

Restriction of movement into and out of the affected learning institutions and schools until there are no more new cases. This includes prohibition of visits by parents.

Enhanced public health and social measures including physical distancing, hand washing and sanitisation and proper wearing of face mask and exercising good hygienic standards.
