The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has commissioned a consultancy firm, CPCS Transcom International Limited, to prepare a national transport masterplan for Zimbabwe. The ministry, in a statement on Thursday, said it was planning a transport system that required in-depth knowledge of current transport demands.
“As part of the study, the consultant is tasked to carry out national traffic surveys, including roadside interviews, public transport origin-destination, manual classified counts and public transport occupancy counts.”
The results from the traffic surveys, according to the ministry, would form an important input into the development of transport policies and strategies for cities, municipalities, towns and districts.
“This will see Zimbabwe meet its aspiration of economic growth, inclusive of development and prosperity for all.
“The general travelling and motoring public are requested to cooperate with the survey teams and contribute to the development of the national plan.”
At least 40 enumerators and their supervisors will conduct surveys and do counts at regional trunk roads leading into major cities, towns, border points, major bus ranks and train stations.
The transport sector masterplan would promote inclusive growth and is designed to champion gender equality and equity in the distribution of transport infrastructure and services.
Zimbabwe is a landlocked country hence national and regional transport connectivity is a necessary condition for promoting economic activity and cross border trade.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is responsible for the overall management of transport policy and regulation as well as the administration of road, rail, aviation and inland water transport.
