THE Miss Independence pageant is set to become an annual platform celebrating Zimbabwe’s freedom while grooming the next generation of models, organisers have said.
The inaugural edition, held on April 17 at Magwegwe Youth Centre in Bulawayo, marked the beginning of what organisers intend to establish as a recurring event on the modelling calendar.
Run by Vanessa Miamahle Dube and Kimberly Kristy Moyo, the pageant was staged under the theme, “Roots of Freedom, Wings of Tomorrow” blending a tribute to the country’s liberation history with a focus on future opportunities for young people.
Young contestants from the Toto and Teen categories took to the ramp, showcasing their talent and confidence in a competition designed to nurture emerging models.
In the Toto category, Nozuko Maphosa was crowned Little Miss Independence, while Amahle China took the Miss Independence 2026 title. Nobuhle Makwirimimba was named first princess, with Anenyasha as second princess.
In the Teen category, Melisa Pearline Moyo claimed the Miss Independence Queen crown, followed by Tahanha Ndlovu as first princess and Melody Dube as second princess. Kendra Moyo received the Model with Best Personality award.
Miamahle said the long-term vision is to grow the pageant into an annual celebration that honours the country’s independence while empowering young women.
“Objectives of the pageant include giving young women a platform to showcase leadership, intelligence and advocacy. We want to promote unity by embracing Ubuntu and bringing together contestants from diverse backgrounds,” she said.
“We are grateful to to those who have supported this event which will now be held annually as we celebrate the freedom we have as Zimbabweans.”
