The forthcoming Miss Nkulumane 2026 pageant is seeking to redefine the purpose of beauty pageantry by using the crown as a platform to develop young women into confident leaders, effective communicators and budding entrepreneurs.
The community-based pageant, being organised by Vision Arts Foundation, is targeting young women aged between 17 and 25, with 12 to 15 contestants expected to battle for the crown at the grand finale on December 5.
The pageant will be held under the theme “She Leads. We Rise.” Vision Arts Foundation founder Wesley Thabiso Gandary said the initiative was conceived to ensure participation in a pageant translates into skills and opportunities that contestants can carry with them long after the final crowning.
“Miss Nkulumane was inspired by the need to create opportunities for talented young women in Nkulumane to develop their confidence, leadership, communication and entrepreneurial skills. The initiative goes beyond beauty by promoting purpose, community involvement and positive role models, inspiring young women to believe in their potential and become leaders in their communities,” he said.
Gandary said the pageant would deliberately move away from placing physical appearance at the centre of judging, with contestants instead expected to demonstrate qualities that reflect their ability to make a positive contribution to society.
“Our judging process looks beyond physical appearance, focusing on confidence, communication, talent, intelligence, cultural awareness, character, leadership and community involvement. We want to crown a young woman who demonstrates purpose, understands her community and is prepared to lead through action and service,” he said.
The organisers have also made the pageant exclusively for young women residing in Nkulumane, with Gandary saying this was important in ensuring that the competition remained rooted in the community it seeks to serve.
“That is why Miss Nkulumane is strictly for young ladies who are residents of Nkulumane. We want the pageant to genuinely represent the young women, identity, talent and aspirations of the Nkulumane community,” he said.
Beyond empowering young women, the pageant is also being positioned as a platform for the wider Bulawayo creative sector, with musicians, poets, dancers, designers, actors, visual artists and other creatives expected to benefit from opportunities to showcase their work.
Gandary said the organisers wanted the event to create connections between different creative disciplines while giving emerging talent greater visibility.
“Miss Nkulumane aims to celebrate and support Bulawayo’s young creative talent by providing musicians, poets, dancers, designers, actors, visual artists and other creatives with opportunities to showcase their work, gain exposure and build networks,” he said.
“The pageant will bring different creative disciplines together, encouraging collaboration, professional connections and career growth. Our vision is for Miss Nkulumane to become a platform that not only celebrates young women, but also contributes to the growth of Bulawayo’s creative industry,” he said.
