MITCHELL NGWENYA, a proud daughter of Mhlahlandlela Village in Lupane, was crowned Miss Rural Zimbabwe Matabeleland North Province on Saturday during a vibrant cultural showcase held in Ntabazinduna.

Dressed in traditional attire that reflected her cultural roots, Ngwenya captivated the audience with her beauty, confidence and strong sense of purpose. The event’s setting — framed by the rolling Ntabazinduna hills — added to its authenticity, while performances blended traditional rhythms with contemporary beats.

Contestants were adorned with tribal body art and represented a rich tapestry of cultures, including Xhosa, Tonga, Ndebele and Nambya, each proudly expressing their heritage through symbolic colours and patterns.

Ngwenya credited her journey in the pageant to Regent Chief Mabhikwa, who introduced her to pageant founder, Mrs Sipho Mazibuko.

“I’m grateful to Regent Chief Mabhikwa for connecting me with Mrs Sipho Mazibuko, who allowed me to participate in the pageant. I had an amazing experience during the preparations. Winning this title has empowered me as a rural girl and boosted my confidence,” said Ngwenya.

She encouraged other rural youths to take part in such initiatives, affirming that success is not defined by one’s location.

“If I win the national title, I want to lead campaigns to raise awareness about teenage pregnancies and early marriages. My win is proof that no dream is too far-fetched. I hope to inspire others to rise above their circumstances and take advantage of the platforms available to them.”

The event was hosted by popular entertainer Madlela Sikhobokhobo, whose energetic emceeing brought the evening to life as contestants impressed the audience with their poise and cultural pride. Blessing Mpofu from Hwange was named Mr Rural Zimbabwe Matabeleland North.

Musawenkosi Nkala was crowned First Princess, with Thandolwenkosi Khanye named Second Princess. The First Prince title went to Mbongeni Hadebe from Mbembesi, while Mayibongwe, also from Mbembesi, was named Second Prince.

The national finals are expected to take place at a venue and date yet to be announced, with excitement mounting, among the recently crowned provincial winners.
