Miss tourism Zim set for facelift

With a modelling career spanning over three decades, former model-cum-actress Sarah Mpofu believes that the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe pageant is in safe hands as she will use her experience to rebrand it.

Following her recent appointment to be the patron of the pageant for three years, Sarah will make some changes as a way of uplifting the image of Miss Tourism but she revealed that the pageant would go with the a?Beauty with Brainsa? path as they wanted a person who is aware of what is happening, who can represent the country well.

One of the changes is that she has taken the pageant to the preliminary rounds which will be held in all the countryas regions with help from regional licence holders which she is yet to appoint, a move which she said it would bring back the pageant to the communities.

Who is Sarah Mpofu and why was she the favourite to be chosen by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority to be given a licence and be the patron of Miss Tourism Zimbabwe?

Sarah started modelling in the early 80s when she was still a teenager. She enrolled at a modelling school under the mentorship of Bridget Kruger and graduated in 1986.

In her class she became third best student something she didnat want as she aimed to be the best out of all her peers.

Although it was painful, Sarah didnat give up. In fact she picked the pieces and reinvented herself to be a respected model in Zimbabwean history.

a?After I graduated I started focusing more on myself as a model and in my life I have won many contests one of them being Miss Bulawayo in 1988,a? she said.

The passion of modelling was in the family and Sarah who grew up when the society shamed modelling as a dirty a?uselessa? profession, met her soulmate the late Peter Mpofu who was also a model and cosmetologist by profession.

As they combined modelling vision and financial forces, Fingers Modelling Agency and salon meant to hair dress the black community and their models was born in 1988.

With her modelling agency still in existence, SarahA has groomed a lot of models including the reigning Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Ashley Morgan, former Miss Tourism Samantha Tshuma, former Miss Zimbabwe Lorraine Maphala, male model Hussein Abdulah now based in South Africa, to mention a few.

As the new government calls upon different foreigners to invest in the country, Sarah Mpofu believes her calling to be the patron of Miss Tourism Zimbabwe came at the right time as she already has people from different European countries that are willing to come and invest in the local modelling industry.

a?In 2015 I went to China for Miss World, there I attended a pageant licence holdersa meeting which had representatives from all the countries which qualified for the world event. I learnt a lot which I will inject to the local Miss Tourism and I once talked to some of the modelling instructors to come and invest in the country which is in line with the current government economic policy,a? she said.

Sarah has once successfully held Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, Miss Africa, Miss Zimbabwe and Miss Bulawayo. .
