It was a mixed bag affair at dancehall musician Freeman’s birthday bash in Dzivaresekwa over the weekend. The event was a double celebration for the musician, born Emegy Slyvesta Chizanga, who turned 28 on June 21 as he also launched his album “Mangoma Ihobho” that was released a few weeks ago. As early as 4pm hundreds had gathered for the free of charge event waiting to see their favourite dancehall artistes performing.
Several dancehall chanters took turns to do what they know best on stage as they made a mark at the “Joina City” hitmaker’s double celebration. Hwindi President managed to thrill fans with his “Tambirai Monarch” being the most popular track. The crowd sang along to most of his songs before he paved the way for several DJs.
Sniper Storm, who has been out of the limelight for a long time, convinced the crowd that he was still in the game with his old hits “Kwarira Mukati”, “Mafans Angu” and songs from his album “Gunfire”.
The most popular performer of the night was Seh Calaz whose real name is Tawanda Mumanyi. “Takuimba ngoma manje nekuti Tawanda auya (We are now getting into real fun because Tawanda is here)” that was his statement before he jumped on stage.
He belted out most of his songs before “Mumota Murikubvira” that prompted fans to rush towards the stage. That became a busy moment for security details until the musician pleaded with them to use minimum force.
He was forced to return to the stage after fans called for another round of songs from the man of the night. Upon his return on stage he played songs that include “Madhudhucha” and still the crowd could not get enough of him.
The chanter was called for the third time before he pleaded with fans to give a chance for other chanters who had come to celebrate with Freeman. It took him several minutes to get out of the stadium as fans mobbed his car cheering him.
Dancehall lovers burst into excitement when the MCs announced the coming of Killer T who is known as the Dancehall Chairman. He got hero’s welcome on stage but the musician failed to rise to the occasion.
The “Chikorobho” hitmaker decided to play unfamiliar songs before leaving the stage prematurely. Freeman came on stage clad in blue suit and performed with a live band. He celebrated his birthday in style and played songs from his album much to the delight of the fans. Other dancehall musicians who performed at the event were Kinna, Guspy Warrior, Celsius and Jah Child.
