SOUTH Africa’s Anga ‘MJ’ Makubalo says he misses being on the set of the now defunct soapie Generations which launched his music career describing his stint as an unforgettable one. MJ was part of the 16 actors fired last year by Generations’ executive producer Mfundi Vundla after a fallout with them over salaries.
The move saw Vundla revamping and re-launching the soapie as Generations: the Legacy.
NaakMusiQ, as MJ is now known, said Generations launched his music career to where it is right now.
“I do miss the atmosphere on Generations and the people that I acted with. I miss the crew, the makeup and the wardrobe and the rest of the crew. It was truly a great experience and Generations played a huge part in being who I am. So those are the memories that I’ll never forget,” said NaakMusiQ.
The Port Elizabeth-born actor said being fired was a blessing in disguise as he could now pursue his music career fully.
“As much as we left because of money issues, I realised that it has opened so many doors and I’m now focused on the things that I’m passionate about, music and presenting. I’ve got more roles as an actor which is allowing me to grow instead of being one character all the time like in a soapie,” said NaakMusiQ.
He said he has landed the lead role on eTV’s crime drama, Z’bondiwe.
“I’m involved in Z’bondiwe and I’m the lead actor there. It’s a story about a lawyer whose fiancé gets kidnapped and he can’t use the law to rescue her because it’s corrupt. So he decides to join a rival gang to the one that kidnapped her,” said NaakMusiQ.
NaakMusiQ said music was in his blood as most of his family members were singers in their own right and his stage name was an acronym of the first letters of his family members.
“The letter N is for my mom Nomvula, A is for my older sister Asanda, the second A is my name. Music is a family thing as my mother, grandmother and sister used to sing.
“I decided to take it to the next level by going to school at Damelin in South Africa and learnt how to read and write music and how to perform better on stage. I was taught by the great RJ Benjamin who has really shaped me to be the singer I am,” said NaakMusiQ.
Described as a heartthrob by many women, NaakMusiQ said he appreciated the support he got from his fans especially the female ones.
““The ladies are the majority of the people who support my music and there’s no keeping them away. I embrace them, show them my love as they show me their support and these are the people who buy my CDs and come to the shows at the end of the day,” said NaakMusiQ.
