IN a refreshing development, a group from Rusape — Mnenga Band — emerged victorious in the Chibuku Road to Fame provincial finals held in Marondera, and will represent Manicaland at the national finals in Harare next month.
This was the first time in many years to have a musical band from Rusape, to win the Chibuku Road to Fame provincial title.
The Afro-fusion band, led by Musa Maruva, shocked many, considering that they were competing with seasoned groups led by seasoned mentors and veterans in the music industry.
They also almost came late for their performance after their car developed a mechanical fault before reaching the venue, yet they were supposed to be the first outfit to perform.
Shockingly there was no group from Mutare District that tasted the top three — a very rare development since the birth of the competition years ago. It looks like the new format came with new winners.
Watsomba Stars from Mutasa District, were came second, while ASG Band from Nyanga was third.
Maruva reflected on their journey to victory with Weekender Entertainment, describing it as an unexpected and humbling experience.
“We are truly humbled. Winning was not something we anticipated, and it came as a shock. There were many bands better prepared than us, so it is an honour to have come out on top.
“Prior to the event, we faced numerous hurdles, including car breakdown. Our vehicle developed a mechanical fault just a few kilometres from the venue, and we were scheduled to perform first. Fortunately, we managed to arrive just in time and impressed the adjudicators,” he recounted.
The seven-member outfit played three songs titled, “Purezha”, “Mbabvu” and “Mari”.
The provincial competitions were held for the first time under a classic and yesteryear format where groups underwent auditions first before facing-off in the provincial contest.
The competition, widely known for unearthing raw talent from rural and urban communities, once again placed emphasis on the audition process this time, fusing competition with cost-cutting measures to ensure the long-standing programme stays afloat amid changing economic times.
Other groups that participated in Marondera are Dapurahanzva, a traditional music group that has recently rebranded into an Afro-contemporary outfit, Ntswai Ntswai Academy, Black Arrows and Mushanga Band.
The competition, sponsored by Delta Beverages, has over the years evolved into more than just a music contest, but it is a cultural movement and for many musicians, it remains the first real chance at exposure and professional growth.
National Arts Council of Zimbabwe Manicaland regional manager, Carol Makoni said: “The level of competition was good. All groups that participated were determined to win. We would like to wish the winners the best as they prepare for a more competitive contest set for Harare. It will not be a stroll in the park, but we are confident that they will pull a pleasant surprise.”
