Mokoomba listed alongside Drake

WITH a new album on the way, Victoria Falls band Mokoomba has been named as one of the world acts to watch this year by Britaina��s Guardian newspaper, who put the group in a prestigious list that included stars like Drake, The Weekend and Black Sabbath.

Mokoomba slowly cultivated a worldwide audience for their music which combines the use of traditional instruments, modern techniques and various languages spoken in Zimbabwea��s cultural melting pot.

While on the home front the group seemingly failed to make any headway, last year was a highpoint in their careers as they continued their worldwide travels while they also became the first Zimbabweans to play at the prestigious Apollo Theatre.

Their music and international fame seems to be growing, as this week they were listed as part of the Future Sounds of Rock and Pop list, a list which included some of the worlda��s most famous luminaries in various genres.

Mokoomba, who have another UK tour looming on the horizon, was the only African act on the list.

a�?The welcome return of one of the finest young bands in Africa. Mokoomba are from Victoria Falls in the north of Zimbabwe, and mix local Tonga styles with global influences including funk and rap, with powerful, soulful vocals from Mathias Muzaza matched by the guitar work of Trustworth Samende.

Their new album, Luyando, will be followed by live dates that are still being finalised,a�? the Guardian wrote of the group.
