MOKOOMBA, THE BAND WHICH DARED TO DREAM

MOKOOMBA have come a long way from their establishment in Victoria Falls to become the best touring Zimbabwean musical group on the world stage.

And, the group wants to conquer more ground.

Speaking to H-Metro, Mokoomba spokesperson, Abundance Mutori, said:

“A lot has changed from the time we formed our band in Chinotimba Township in Victoria Falls in 2008.

“For example, we did not have our own instruments and equipment and we did not have much support.

“In general, everything is much better now and we are continuing to improve ourselves and to also assist other upcoming bands who want to follow the route that we have taken.

“Touring is a large part of how we earn a living.

“As professional musicians, we also have revenue from our recordings and other activities that we do like giving music lessons, and conducting workshops.

“We work with a very organised team that plans our tours.”

He added:

“So far, we have not had any major challenges and we are happy to have travelled and performed in many countries, showcasing the richness and diversity of cultures that we have in Zimbabwe.

“The new album ‘Tusona: Tracings In The Sand,’ is a project that pays homage to the Luvale tradition of using signs and symbols drawn in the sand during initiation ceremonies.

“It represents our artistic growth and reflects our collective experiences over the years, forging a distinctive musical identity.

“The production was done locally, led by our lead guitarist Trustworth Samende, and mixed by Tremier Msipa, with the album cover design illustration done by Lomedy Mhako.

“For the first time we had some collaborations on the album, the songs talk about loss, love and also a respect of tradition in a fast changing world.”
