corpse in a cattle pen.
Mashonaland East provincial spokesperson Inspector Bulisani Bhebhe confirmed the murder of Nokutenda Chitekeshe of Nemuringa Village under Chief Chimoyo in Mutoko.
He said the mother, Alice Mudzengerere, was sleeping with the child before waking up and strangling her.
“Upon noticing that the baby had not died, Mudzengerere took her outside and went to a cattle pen where she crashed her head several times on a rocky surface, killing her instantly,” said Insp Bhebhe.
He said a neighbour who heard the baby crying went on to investigate and later tipped the police.
“An alert neighbour who heard Nokutenda crying went out to investigate, but Mudzengerere had already fled the scene leaving the baby’s corpse in a cattle pen,” said Insp Bhebhe.
“The neighbour mobilised other villagers and made a police report, leading to Mudzengerere’s arrest.”
Insp Bhebhe said it could not be established why Mudzengerere committed the offence. He said investigations were still underway and that Mudzengerere was to appear in court soon.
“Members of the public are urged to seek help or counselling from professionals or relatives and friends whenever they have problems to avoid such scenarios,” said Insp Bhebhe.
“People should also value and respect human life.”
