MONGAMELI Tshuma sent Bosso fans into song on Sunday when he tore through the Dynamos defence and scored in Highlanders’ 2-2 Castle Lager Premiership draw Rufaro on Sunday.

The 24-year-old only arrived from the lower divisions but his calm finish in the country’s biggest fixtures instantly pushed him into the spotlight.

Highlanders coach Benjani Mwaruwari had already noticed the youngster during pre-season but kept his praise measured.

“We could be having a gem in Mongameli Tshuma,” said Benjani.

“He looks talented. We will guide him and see how the season goes.”

Mongameli has wasted little time making an impression.

Sunday’s strike carried real weight.

With the match tight, Mongameli found space, skipped past the ‘keeper, floored a defender with a body swerve and rolled the ball into an empty net.

The away section at Rufaro erupted.

Older supporters could not help thinking about another player who once arrived quietly from the lower leagues.

In 1998 coach Madinda Ndlovu tipped a young midfielder named Dazzy Kapenya for greatness after he joined Highlanders from the ZIFA Southern Region.

“You will soon be writing about this boy,” Madinda said.

Kapenya went on to win Soccer Star of the Year, play at the Africa Cup of Nations and move to South Africa with Manning Rangers.

Highlanders are again searching for the next big name.

The club have not won a major trophy since the 2019 Chibuku Super Cup and reports earlier this year placed its debt at about US$470,000.

Mongameli arrived from Hwange with little noise.

One goal at Rufaro later, Bosso fans are already watching closely.
