HIGHLANDERS have placed a valuation of US$200 000 on rising star Mongameli Tshuma as CAPS United appear to step-up their interest in the attacking midfielder, whose future has become one of the biggest talking points following Bosso’s recent players’ strike.

Zimpapers Sports Hub understands Highlanders will only entertain offers in the region of US$200 000 for the 24-year-old, who is contracted to the Bulawayo giants for another two years after enjoying a breakthrough campaign that has elevated him into one of the country’s most sought-after talents.

The valuation comes at a time when Tshuma’s name has been thrust into the spotlight following the industrial action that disrupted Highlanders’ preparations ahead of Saturday’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash against MWOS.

Although coach Benjani Mwaruwari maintained after the 2-1 victory that Tshuma had simply been rested, Zimpapers Sports Hub understands the midfielder was among a group of players affected by the week’s labour dispute over outstanding salaries and bonuses.

Brighton Ncube, Archford Faira and Reward Muza were also left out of the travelling squad after failing to train during the week.

The off-field unrest has coincided with growing interest from CAPS United, who are understood to be keen on bringing the exciting midfielder to Harare during the mid-season transfer window.

Speculation gathered momentum on Saturday after Tshuma was spotted at Rufaro Stadium watching CAPS United’s 2-2 draw with Triangle United while Highlanders travelled to Norton for their encounter against MWOS.

The sight added fuel to rumours that the Green Machine are preparing a move for the Warriors midfielder, whose stock has risen sharply over the past six months.

Highlanders chief executive officer Denzil Mnkandla confirmed the club was aware of the reports.

“We are aware of the rumours, but no official communication has come from CAPS United regarding the player,” Mnkandla said.

That, however, has done little to cool speculation.

Sources say CAPS United admire Tshuma’s versatility and attacking qualities and view him as an ideal addition to bolster their squad for the second half of the season.

Tshuma’s rise has been one of Zimbabwean football’s success stories this year.

After joining Highlanders from Hwange, he quickly established himself as a regular under Benjani Mwaruwari with a string of impressive displays that earned him a maiden Warriors call-up.

His rapid ascent has inevitably brought pressure. Recent weeks have seen sections of the Bosso faithful demand more from the player as Highlanders battled inconsistency, while the club’s financial challenges have created uncertainty behind the scenes.
