CLIVE “Mono” Mukundu is celebrating 38 years in music.

And, if there’s anyone who has earned the title of living legend, then, it’s him.

Multi-instrumentalist, producer and mentor, Mono has seen it all from cramped shacks to stadium tours, from late-night studio sessions to international recognition.

And, he’s still going strong.

In a recent video marking the milestone, Mono took fans on a nostalgic ride through his early years.

“Every 22nd of January, I celebrate my entry into the music industry,” he said.

“This video chronicles my journey from day one until now. It’s been a wild ride.”

Mono’s story begins in 1988 when he met Chiketa, real name Noah Muringai, and together they formed the band Sarungano Chanters.

“I was the composer and lead vocalist, Chiketa played lead guitar because I couldn’t,” Mono said.

“By the end of the year, after a lot of practice, I became lead guitarist and Chiketa moved to rhythm.

“That’s how it started we learned together.”

Life wasn’t glamorous.

“On 8 December 1990, we moved to Dangamvura Hotel,” he said.

“Salaries were low, so we rented a shack where all six of us lived.

“No furniture, just a plumber’s stove and some blankets. And I had a single dreadlock that was my monologue.”

Fans might chuckle but it was in those humble beginnings that Mono’s relentless drive was forged.

Mono’s career skyrocketed as he worked with some of Zimbabwe’s finest, including the late Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi.

But success wasn’t always smooth.

“I was fired in 2007,” he says.

“But that opened doors. Chiwoniso invited me on tour, and I used the studio equipment I had bought to start Monolio Studio.

“That’s when I took control of my destiny.”

Since then, Mono has been unstoppable.

His studio has produced countless hits, shaping the sound of modern Zimbabwean music.

“I’ve been building my studio since I was eight years old in my imagination,” he says.

“It officially started in 2015, and I’ve never looked back.”

Education is another arena where Mono leads by example.

“I keep telling artists: learn, study, and grow. Music isn’t just about talent knowledge is power.

“You can’t survive in this industry without understanding it,” he says. At 38 years, Mono Mukundu is proof that dedication, discipline, and a bit of daring can turn dreams into legacy.

From Bulawayo to the world, his story is one of perseverance, passion, and pure music magic.

And the best part?

He’s just getting started.
