MONOMOTAPA players boycotted training at the weekend as their financial woes mount, but the leadership remains hopeful they will get a positive result against Triangle in a Castle Lager Premiership match at Gwanzura this afternoon. Club chairman Joseph Mukoki said the players were supposed to train over the weekend but only turned up at Alex and refused to work out.
“We have been playing well and I believe the material we have is even better than some teams in the Premiership but we do not have the zeal to wrap up the matches when the players have other issues.
“They boycotted training at the weekend and we are just hopeful they will remain in shape to win against Triangle,” said Mukoki.
It has been a rough year for Monomotapa after their chief financier Solomon Mugavazi was suspended from football by the Zifa board and he decided to withdraw his funding for the club.
Since then it has been a one-way trip into the wilderness for the club and its property was attached by former coach Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe over a labour dispute.
Veteran striker Kuda Musharu has been suspended by his club for indiscipline while Obey Mwerahari is doubtful because of an injury.
Conrad Nyambabvu, the Monomotapa assistant coach, said the players were determined to avoid relegation.
“In the last three league matches, we have avoided defeats and we should continue with the attitude.
“Our aim is to attack from the word go and we also need to defend well,” said Nyambabvu.
Monoz have shared spoils in their last league matches against FC Platinum, Tripple B and champion Dynamos.
“Our position on the log is precarious but we can survive if we do the job ourselves. Our fate is still in our hands and we can escape from the predicament.
“Looking at our fixtures, we have already played the so-called big teams and now face teams that are in the same situation as us on the log,” said Nyambabvu.
Triangle have suspended the former Monoz duo of Daniel Kamunhenga and Tawanda Muyendi for going AWOL.
