ABOUT 35 secondary schools will converge at Montrose High School tomorrow for a chess invitational tournament.
The tournament will be divided into two age groups, juniors consisting of Forms 1-3 and the seniors made up of Forms 4-6, in both the boys and girls’ categories.
David Livingstone, Eveline, Girls’ College, Pumula, Founders, CBC, Mandwandwe, Gifford and Petra, are among some of the schools that have already confirmed their participation.
Tournament organiser Admire Tafadzwa Moyo said it was good to have such events that involved junior players.
“Chess is a game of war so we want to use it as a life survival skill for the youths. The fact that every piece on the board has a unique form of movement and is a part of the whole makes the game complex. Introducing students to chess allows them to recognise complexities and enhances their analytical, critical thinking,” said Moyo.
Girls’ College sports director Sheila Williams said her team was very enthusiastic and would be out to scoop the top awards in both categories.
“Chess is compulsory for all our Form 1 learners so this tournament will give our juniors an opportunity to perfect their skills and to learn from other players from the different schools,” said Williams.
The winning teams in both categories will walk away with three chess boards. Excelling individuals will also walk away with some cash prizes.
