MORALE was high at the farewell ceremony for the Bulawayo National Association of Secondary School Heads Track and Field Championships at Townshend High School, on Sunday.
Team Bulawayo was on Sunday given a fitting send-off to Bindura, at a ceremony attended by heads, sports directors, parents, the Provincial Education Director Dumisani Nkwala and the sponsors, Bakers Inn, Save Premiere Services and Vordim.
The team left for Chipadze High School, Bindura, the hosts of the 2025 Nash Track and Field Championships yesterday morning.
The event will start tomorrow, with today expected to be spent on athlete accreditation.
Bulawayo Metropolitan Province is sending a delegation of 114, comprising 78 athletes and 36 officials.
The athletes will be vying for medals in various disciplines, which include running, high and long jump, javelin, shot put and discus throwing.
In an interview, team captain Remoneilo Sebata said that she is excited and optimistic about the competition as this is their chance to showcase their hard work and dedication.
“I started athletics when I was in Grade Four, this is my last year in high school and I have been to the nationals four times. This term, I have 17 medals and I am looking forward to bringing more,” she said.
The Bulawayo Metropolitan Province head-in-charge of athletics, Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu, said that they are excited to be having the best of Bulawayo, the morale is high even though they are having a few injuries.
“The coaches are very happy with the work they did, we were in camp for the past two weeks. We have seen most of the children beat their own previous records during camp,” said Ndlovu.
He also expressed gratitude to the sponsors, stating that their support plays an important role in the success of the team.
Vordim Enterprise provided the team with 800 litres of diesel while Save Premiere Services provided water.
The main sponsor, Bakers Inn, provided tracksuits for the team and will also meet food and accommodation expenses.
