adminDonga who was in Bulawayo at Christmas, said he had made up his mind to join the country’s list of boxing promoters.
He said as a boxer he wanted to make an impact and help revive the sport. Professional boxing has been in limbo with very few boxing tournaments being held and the truth of the matter is that boxers have been ripped off as they were paid a pittance as allowances. Some of the allowances were not enough even to pay doctors’ consultation fees.
“I have decided to go into boxing promotions. I have learnt a lot during my time as a boxer. I have worked with many promoters and seen the shortfalls here and there.
“I understand the plight of boxers, they deserve better. We want to run away from a situation where the promoter uses his business or family money for a bill. The money must come from the corporate sector, we have to brand boxing to attract sponsorships and to that end we have to be professional and transparent in whatever we do.
“I believe in the brand which is boxing that is why I am venturing into boxing promotion,” said Donga.
He joins a list which includes Boris Znider, Stalin Mau, Edson Zvobgo (Jnr) to mention a few who have held fort and ensured professional boxing continues to tick in the country.
For the promoters it has been passion and they have hopes that the boxers in their stables could one day get better paying international fights.
When Zimbabwe was still a member of the Commonwealth, Mau Mau had a busy international schedule taking Zimbabwe boxers abroad.
Since then there have been irregular fights in Malawi, Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia where our boxers have met with mixed fortunes.
Mordicai said the name of his stable will be Mordicai (Big Fish) Donga Boxing Academy and Promotions.
The academy, he said, would help groom young talent through committed trainers in Bulawayo and Harare who include Phillip Striker.
“There is so much talent out there. What is needed is to identify the talent and come up with development programmes through organising regular local fights before fighting outside our borders,” said Donga.
