Thirty-four women participated in the beginners’ clinic that had 54 participants in total, most of them school teachers and they are expected to spearhead development of the sport at grassroots.
Veteran mentor Gibson Homela conducted the clinic.
The Zisca Bulawayo Province spokesman Marko Dube said for soccer to develop, they had to train as many people as possible that would then teach aspiring players the correct basics of the game.
“This is part of our developmental thrust that we discussed with other stakeholders that for soccer to develop, we need qualified personnel who will spearhead these developmental programmes hence we are having this course so that schools can have knowledgeable people in charge. These people will give proper technical expertise to the players and help produce complete players who have a better understanding of the game.
“We are also impressed with the number of women that came for the course. Actually, this is the first time to have such a big number of women participating in a major course,” Dube said.
The participants did theory and practical.
Gladys Utete, the Bulawayo Province Women’s Football boss who coordinated the women said they were determined to equip women who were interested in coaching.
“Our objective is to develop ladies who are enthusiastic about women’s soccer. Homela was tough throughout the course but we are happy that these women managed to endure and finish the course,” said Utete.
If the participants pass, they will wait for a year before embarking on the next level.
Dube said they would monitor the activities of their participants.
“We want people who will go out and make a difference. We will be available to assist them wherever they will be,” Dube said.
