A CHIPINGE woman (36) and her 15-year-old daughter were recently arrested for allegedly terminating a pregnancy.

This follows suspicions raised by clinic staff during a routine medical check-up.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the arrest of the mother and her minor daughter, (both names withheld), both of RD Compound, Ratelshoek Estate in Chipinge.

“On June 12, 2025, the suspects were arrested after a nurse at Ratelshoek Clinic observed that the juvenile was bleeding and had a soft abdomen, suggesting a possible abortion,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
He said the matter comes in the wake of an earlier report filed on May 30, where the minor had reported a case of sexual intercourse with a young person against one Tapiwanashe Ganyeka.

At the time, she was confirmed to be nine weeks and four days pregnant.

According to Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, the chain of events began on June 7 after the conclusion of the initial sexual abuse case.

“It is alleged that the mother, gave her daughter some tablets after the girl complained of a headache.

“Shortly after taking the tablets, the juvenile began bleeding. However, despite these symptoms, her mother did not seek medical attention for her,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

The matter only came to light when the two went to Ratelshoek Clinic to officially register the pregnancy.

The clinic had summoned them to come and register the pregnancy.

“A nurse, Kudzanai Njunga noticed something was wrong during the examination and alerted the estate’s security officer, Edwin Nkala, who arrested both suspects. She had noticed that the girl was bleeding and had a soft abdomen, signs that suggested an abortion had occurred.

“The following day, on June 13, Nkala escorted them to ZRP Junction Gate Base to report the matter,” he said.

Police officers from the base attended the scene and interviewed both the mother and daughter, who reportedly admitted to the allegations.

The teenager was later referred to Chipinge District Hospital for a full medical examination.

“Investigations into the case are still underway,” added Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
