TOMORROW is Mothers’ Day, an occasion dedicated to celebrating love, gratitude and the invaluable roles mothers play in people’s lives and society.
This heartfelt observance honours not only biological mothers, but also mother figures who have made profound contributions through their sacrifices and unconditional love.
Across the globe, people take this opportunity to express appreciation for those who have nurtured and supported them.
While the dates for Mother’s Day vary by continent, the underlying sentiment remains the same.
For example, the United Kingdom celebrated Mother’s Day on March 30, although it is not recognised as a public holiday.
In contrast, the United States of America and Zimbabwe commemorate it tomorrow.
Regardless of the specific date, the essence of this day—honouring mothers—holds cherished memories in the hearts of many.
People pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by their mothers and the love that has shaped their lives.
A series of events typically marks this special day, with mothers celebrated in numerous ways.
Those who have lost their mothers frequently visit gravesites to lay wreaths, honouring their memory. Many take the opportunity to pamper their mothers with gifts, showcasing the precious bond shared between them.
Social media platforms buzz with activity as influencers and everyday individuals share their heartfelt experiences, emphasising the importance of maternal figures.
Foster mothers, too, receive recognition as people express gratitude for their kindness and support.
In addition to traditional gifts like flowers and cards, some individuals go above and beyond, purchasing valuable items ranging from kitchen utensils to furniture or even houses for their mothers.
This day is not only about material gifts but also about creating lasting memories and showing appreciation. The emotional connections between mothers and children often lead to profound public expressions of gratitude, making Mother’s Day a uniquely significant event.
Judging by its widespread appeal and the excitement surrounding it, Mother’s Day has increasingly eclipsed Father’s Day, which is celebrated on June 15.
This prominence can be attributed to several factors. Culturally, many societies have long histories of celebrating motherhood, emphasising the nurturing roles mothers play within families and communities. Additionally, the emotional connections between mothers and their children are frequently depicted as deeply impactful, prompting public displays of affection and gratitude.
Moreover, the commercial aspect of Mother’s Day has also contributed to its heightened visibility.
Retailers heavily market gifts and experiences tailored for mothers, further encouraging spending.
This commercialisation not only raises the profile of Mother’s Day but also reinforces its importance in contemporary society.
As we celebrate this special occasion, let us take a moment to appreciate the countless ways mothers enrich our lives and shape our futures.
In our Zimbabwean context, tomorrow won’t pass unnoticed, with a series of activities lined up countrywide.
Some mothers will gather for church conferences and parties.
All-female events will also mark the occasion, as this has become a common phenomenon.”
Radio and television personality Tendayi “Sweet Thang” Chakanyuka is looking forward to the day.
“It’s a day that means a lot to those who have brought life into the world or mother figures playing important roles in society.
“This day is different from Women’s Day but is a special occasion to all mothers and mother figures out there. I can’t wait for it and also celebrate it with my peers,” she stressed.
She was also clear about her expectations for Mother’s Day, stating, “I will be at home, of course, and I do expect to be pampered on this special occasion.
“Those with gifts and surprises can bring them along to me on this important day that we are marking on Sunday.
“I also expect to meet my sister and just go out together to celebrate ourselves as mothers,” she added.

Jazz sensation and music mentor Duduzile Manhenga shared her thoughts on Mother’s Day, highlighting that it should not pass unnoticed.
“Honestly, mothers go through a lot in life, and I think every day should be Mother’s Day. However, it’s really good for us to select a particular day to celebrate mothers and fathers because throughout the year we are busy with so many things.
“If we don’t plan and be intentional about celebrating people who mean a lot to us, we may forget,” she emphasised.
Manhenga urged children to make it a culture to celebrate their mothers.
“It’s a very good day to celebrate and to thank God for the gift of a mother. However, children should not just wait for Mother’s Day to show their love because mothers sacrifice every single day.
“They make sacrifices, sometimes sleeping without eating so that their children can eat. I would enjoy to know that I have done that for the sake of my children. I know the number of nights I have spent thinking about what’s next for them, and yes, it’s good for us to be intentional and plan to have a certain day where we celebrate one another. I think there should also be a couples’ day,” she added.
Similar sentiments were shared by emerging events manager and female artists’ rights defender Sarah Dhliwayo, who is committed to empowering women. “Life would be meaningless if we don’t celebrate mothers because they raised us, including all the powerful men in the world.
“I believe we should celebrate them every day and show them true love, even with the little that we might have in life. In my case, I always spoil mothers whenever I have something to spare with all sorts of goodies,” she stressed.
With all the attention on mothers, entrepreneur and events planner Benjamin Nyandoro of Jive Zimbabwe, who has been promoting a culinary show under the banner “Boyz Can Cook Meal” in Glen Lorne, Harare, believes the day means a lot to all mothers.
“We are challenging people to bring their mothers for a ‘Boyz Can Cook Meal’ treat at Mother Care Business Centre. We are creating an ambiance for bonding, good music, and quality time with your mom, actually preparing meals for her. We are raised by mothers, enjoying warm and great meals, and we are doing it for them this Sunday on Mother’s Day,” he emphasised.
After all has been said, Mother’s Day, which enhances the celebration of the maternal bond, remains critical in life. It recognises the importance of the relationship between mothers and their children, celebrating the emotional and nurturing connection.
By acknowledging their sacrifices, we do ourselves a huge favour while honouring their countless contributions to their families. This day serves as a reminder to appreciate their hard work and dedication.
Moreover, as we celebrate this day, we should consider the evolving roles of mothers in contemporary society. Many women balance careers and family responsibilities, often facing immense pressure. Recognising and valuing their contributions not only fosters a sense of appreciation but also encourages a culture of support within families. As we mark Mother’s Day, let us elevate the voices of mothers who work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that their efforts are acknowledged and celebrated.
The day should be observed religiously, as it encourages families to come together, strengthening familial bonds and fostering gratitude.
As we mark Mother’s Day, it should be noted that mothers are often seen as primary caregivers, which can lead to greater recognition of their contributions, while fathers may not receive the same level of acknowledgment. However, it should be emphasized that mothers go out of their way to fend for their children.
As the Mother’s Day euphoria fills the air, let special attention be given to all mothers and mother figures who continue to work hard for our well-being.
