Mountaineers in good start

“It was important winning both games in Bulawayo. We didn’t do quite well against Tuskers last season and I am happy we got our game together this time around.
“I hope we will continue that way because if you look at how we played last year, Mountaineers only started winning more consistently in the second round games but it was rather too late,” said Mawoyo.
Mountaineers ensured they began the season on a positive note on Saturday, thanks largely to a 170-run opening partnership between Mawoyo (89) and former national Under-19 opener Kelvin Kasuza (83), as they coasted to a comfortable win.
Tuskers batted first and were restricted to 211/8 in their 50 overs, with Craig Ervine the top scorer after contributing 62 runs to the total. National team player Prosper Utseya took 3-46, including the important scalps of Ervine and Charles Coventry (43) and in response Mountaineers reached 212/3 in 45.4 overs.
They earned four points which placed them second on the table in the limited overs competition behind champions Mashonaland Eagles who beat Southern Rocks by five wickets at Harare Sports Club.
“I knew if we could manage to bat the whole 50 overs there was a chance that we could reach the target.
“So we needed a good start and that opening partnership between me and Kelvin (Kasuza) was a good platform.
“It’s good our batting, which has been a major weakness, has started on a positive note. I am also happy for Shingi (Masakadza). His initial overs in the T20 game were a bit expensive but he managed to get himself up and took wickets at the key moment,” said Mawoyo.
