THE internet has officially spoken, and the global roll of cinematic shame has a new, prominent member. Move over Hollywood – South Africa’s very own Sdumo Mtshali has just been inducted into the notorious hall of fame for the world’s most toxic on-screen partners.

Following his mesmerising but deeply triggering performance as the deceptive billionaire tycoon Jonasi Gomora in the hit Netflix African drama series The Polygamist, Mtshali has found himself at the centre of a viral internet meme simply titled: “The List has been updated.”

For years, a select group of actors has maintained a firm grip on viewers’ collective emotional trauma in television and film. These are the men who portray villains, the unhinged, or deeply manipulative romantic partners so convincingly that audiences can barely watch them without a chorus of “yhoos”. Now, thanks to the explosive debut of The Polygamist, creative internet users have officially updated the Mount Rushmore of toxic partners, placing Mtshali right alongside Hollywood’s most infamous fictional red flags.

The viral meme, which has been aggressively making the rounds across social media timelines, features a four-quadrant grid of elite acting talent who have historically left audiences completely stressed out, beginning with Steve Harris on the top left as the undisputed founding father of the list who permanently scarred viewers as the brutally abusive Charles McCarter in Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Next to him on the top right sits Michael Ealy, the actor with the smouldering blue eyes renowned for playing deeply toxic, unhinged, and dangerously manipulative partners in psychological thrillers like The Perfect Guy and For Coloured Girls. The bottom left features Richard T. Jones, who earned his permanent spot on the list for his infuriating portrayal of Mike, the unfaithful and emotionally detached husband in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?, while the bottom right completes the grid with South Africa’s newly crowned King of the South, Sdumo Mtshali, dominating screens as Jonasi Gomora, the double-dealing, secret-keeping polygamist whose web of lies and health crises unravels across 22 dramatic episodes of The Polygamist.

While being added to a list of notoriously disliked characters might sound like a penalty, in the showbiz industry, it is the ultimate badge of honour. The viral joke that “the list has officially been updated” is a testament to Mtshali’s heavyweight acting credentials. To be mentioned in the same breath as icons like Steve Harris and Michael Ealy proves that Mtshali didn’t just play Jonasi Gomora, he embodied him so deeply that he traumatised an entire subcontinent.

As The Polygamist continues to dominate Netflix SA metrics and spark furious cross-border debates about generational trauma, side-chicks, and stolen iPhones, Mtshali can rest easy. He might be the internet’s newest villainous partner, but he has firmly cemented his place in the upper echelons of African television royalty.

Just remember, ladies: if he looks like a Jonasi, run! – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
