Mozambique applauds Malawi

LILONGWE. — The Mozambican government has applauded Malawi over its willingness to host refugees fleeing violence in their home country, Malawi24 has reported.

While making his address during a tripartite meeting at the Kamuzu Palace, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said Malawi had played a big role in helping Mozambican citizens.

Nyusi revealed that his country was trying to convince its citizens to return home, despite reports of rampant violence across the state.

A recent report by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) indicated that approximately 10 000 Mozambican asylum seekers were currently residing in Malawi. According to Karin De Gruilj, UNHCR spokesperson, the influx had been caused by continued conflict between Frelimo government forces and the Mozambican opposition, Renamo. She said many homes had been destroyed, while scores of civilians had been killed as a result of the conflict, causing the remaining citizens to flee. — News24.
