Mozambique on flood alert

General director of the National Disasters Management Institute Joao Ribeiro told Xinhua yesterday in Maputo that the situation is getting worse in the central and northern regions.

Up to now, seven people died following the calamity in the northern province of Nampula.
The victims died of electrocution, after they were swept away by the fury waters. More than 340 families in four Nampula districts are known to have been affected by the calamity.

The downpours also destroyed around 200 infrastructures, such as schools, mosques, churches and cereal processing plants.

Rains are also affecting the neighbouring Niassa province, where they have cut the road linking the two regions.

The Cuamba road leading to Nampula is now impassable, because the bridge has collapsed.
According to the INGC, around 2,000 people have been affected by the calamity.

Ribeiro said the southern region of the country is to be seriously hit by the calamity in the near future.
Last year, the rains killed more than 40 people and affected 5 000 others in the Portuguese speaking nation. More deaths occurred in the central province of Zambezia.
According to Ribeiro, the INGC is prepared to face the situation this year. — AFP.
