THE birth of triplets is often seen as a rare blessing, but for one family struggling to make ends meet, the joy quickly turned into anxiety after the unexpected arrival of triplets brought immediate feeding and financial challenges.

Relief, however, came through Zanu PF Makoni District Coordinating Committee (DCC) secretary for lands and shadow Makoni Central MP Cde Shepherd Nyika, who stepped in to assist following the delivery at Rusape District Hospital last week.

The triplets, two boys and a girl, were born to Ms Agatha Dahwa (31) on February 19 after she had been admitted the previous day.

Hospital medical superintendent Dr Stewart Karembo confirmed the development, saying both the mother and babies were in stable condition following a successful operation.

“There were no complications for both the children and the mother before and after the theatre procedure. The operation went on well, and we are happy with the outcome,” he said.

Dr Karembo said the main challenge facing the family was feeding the infants, noting they required support with milk formula.

“Triplets are not common, and what happened has improved the confidence of our staff. The whole theatre team is happy after the successful operation,” he said.

He commended Cde Nyika for assisting the family. Cde Nyika supplied groceries, clothes, diapers and cash before arranging transport to take the family to its rural home in Denzva Village near Nyazura, Manicaland Province.

He has also pledged to adopt and support the triplets. Dr Karembo applauded the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, Rusape Circuit for assisting the family with clothing and diapers worth about US$600 and pledging support for the first six months after the children’s birth.

Ms Dahwa said she was discharged from the hospital on Sunday and was in good health. She is now a mother of six, having previously delivered twins in 2014 and another child in 2020.

“At first when I received the news that I was going to have triplets, I was shocked, but I later became happy because it is a gift from God,” she said.

She thanked Cde Nyika for his support and for pledging to adopt the children.

“Honourable Nyika gave us diapers, clothes and money and also assisted us with transport back home,” she said, adding that she was grateful for the support from the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe Rusape Circuit.

The father of the triplets, Mr Conwell Nyamutena (46), said the assistance came at a time the family was facing financial challenges.

“I want to thank Honourable Nyika for taking care of the children until they were discharged from the hospital. We are happy,” he said.

Cde Nyika, a farmer and entrepreneur, said he felt honoured that the triplets were born in his constituency.

“When I heard the news, I rushed to the hospital to meet the parents and assist in any way I could. I will continue to support the children,” he said.

Cde Nyika was previously recognised by the Government as one of the country’s youngest successful farmers.
