MP embroiled in Chitungwiza land dispute

A resident of Manyame Park, Loverjoy Chogugudza, has formally lodged a complaint with the Municipality of Chitungwiza, accusing the Member of Parliament for St Mary’s Constituency, Brighton Mazhindu, of misuse of office, corruption, misrepresentation, threats, and verbal assault over a lawfully acquired residential stand.

Mazhindu is a representative of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

In a letter addressed to the Town Clerk dated 9 July 2025, Chogugudza details an incident that occurred on 6 June 2025, at his property located at 10945 Manyame Park.

Chogugudza says he lawfully purchased the stand through municipal channels and is currently constructing his home.

He alleges that he was “violently approached” by Mazhindu, accompanied by a Mr Chinhengo and other unidentified individuals claiming to be land surveyors.

Chogugudza said these individuals, who lacked any official identification or uniform from the Chitungwiza Town Council, demanded to re-peg a stand he had already legally acquired.

He further claims that Mazhindu, “widely known as a land baron in our area,” subjected him to threats and verbal assault, demanding that he vacate the property without presenting any legal documentation to substantiate his claim of ownership.

The incident, Chogugudza asserts, has caused great distress and fear for his safety and that of his family, disrupting the ongoing construction of his home and raising serious concerns about the security of his legal property rights.

Chogugudza has formally requested an immediate investigation into the conduct of the legislator.

He is also seeking assurance of his right to peaceful occupation and development of his legally acquired stand, enhanced security for himself and his family, and communication with all relevant authorities to prevent any further harassment or unlawful claims on his property.

Attached to his complaint, Chogugudza included a police report, a copy of his allocation letter, payment receipts, and approved building plans to substantiate his legal ownership of the residential stand.

This complaint highlights ongoing concerns regarding land disputes and alleged corruption within Chitungwiza, a long-standing issue that has seen some residents lose their properties to politically connected individuals and land barons.
