PUMULA Constituency legislator Hon Sichelesile Mahlangu has pledged to push for improved road infrastructure and the establishment of a new clinic in peri-urban areas as she continues a food distribution programme targeting vulnerable families across the constituency.
On June 21, Hon Mahlangu distributed rice to hundreds of households in Pumula Old and St Peter’s, with the initiative also providing an opportunity for residents to raise community concerns directly with their representative.
The legislator spent time engaging with residents, including pensioners, women and youths, listening to challenges affecting their daily lives and discussing possible solutions.
Hon Mahlangu has previously been involved in supporting educational institutions, churches and youth initiatives within the constituency, while also assisting residents in obtaining critical identity documents such as birth certificates and national identity cards.
Speaking to the media during the distribution programme, Hon Mahlangu identified poor road infrastructure and limited access to healthcare services as some of the pressing issues requiring urgent attention.
“I have engaged the Ministry over our deteriorating roads, especially in peri-urban areas. Commuters and businesses are struggling.
I will fight for consistent maintenance in Pumula,” she said.
She said access to healthcare remained a major concern, particularly for residents in outlying communities who often experience delays in receiving emergency medical assistance.
“Health is another crisis. Ambulances take too long to arrive in peri-urban areas during the day and at night.
I will advocate for a new clinic between St. Peter’s and Methodist.
I will consult residents and take a formal proposal to the Ministry of Health,” said Hon Mahlangu.
Residents welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with their Member of Parliament while benefiting from the food assistance programme.
The rice distribution programme is set to continue, with beneficiaries in Robert Sinyoka expected to receive assistance before the programme moves to Pumula South Hall.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to support vulnerable households while addressing broader development challenges within the constituency.
