Mpala elected Junior Governor for Harare

The election comes as a precursor to the official opening of the 21st session of the Junior Parliament slated for June 15. The event was also used to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the African Union with debates and campaigns by candidates running under this year’s Africa Day theme “ Pan Africanism and Africa Renaissance”.

Mpala won by 19 votes with second place going to Rutendo Mandere of Seke 1 High School with 15 votes in an election contested by 6 candidates. The other four candidates were drawn from Queen Elizabeth, Lord Malvern, Domboramwari and Highfield High 2 School.

The office was filled after the passing of the new constitution, which provides for a provincial council and chairperson instead of governor. This will mean that next year Junior Parliament Elections will have to follow the new Government structure.
