LEGENDARY goalkeeper Japhet “Shortcat” Mparutsa has sensationally blasted ZIFA for dangling a US$64 000 bonus ahead of the Warriors’ 2022 World Cup football qualifying clash against Ethiopia this afternoon.
Zdravko Logarusic’s men take on the East Africans at the Bahir Dar Stadium at 3pm local time.
And ZIFA have put aside US$64 000 to be shared by the players and their technical team should they collect the maximum points against Ethiopia.
The money was secured with the help of Deputy Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Tino Machakaire.
However, Mparutsa, the first goalkeeper to win the Soccer Star of the Year award in Zimbabwe in 1982 while he was turning out for Dynamos, thinks the Warriors need no monetary rewards.
“The moment you start motivating players with money when they come for missionary duties, that’s wrong.
“I think the moment players put on national colours, that’s the biggest motivation.
“Now US$64 000 is out,” he said on Facebook.
A local football fan, MacDonald Jena, agreed with Mparutsa.
“Japhet Mparutsa, the timing as well puts pressure on the team. That money should be channelled towards preparations,”Jena said.
