Kaya FM sports presenter Mpho Maboi is at the centre of a tax dispute after the South African Revenue Service secured a default judgment against her in the Johannesburg High Court over an unpaid income tax bill exceeding R480,000.
The debt did not start at that figure. Court documents reveal that Maboi’s original tax liability stood at just over R336,000, but the amount ballooned after interest of more than R14,600 and penalties of nearly R135,000 were added on top.
SARS issues final demand
The revenue authority sent Maboi a final letter of demand on 19 June 2026, at which point the outstanding balance had grown to more than R468,136.42. She was given 10 business days to either settle the debt or take up one of the relief options available under tax legislation.
Those options included negotiating a payment instalment arrangement, applying to suspend payment while formally disputing the liability, or pursuing a compromise of the debt.
The compromise route allows a taxpayer to apply for a reduction of the amount owed in circumstances where such an arrangement would yield a better outcome for SARS than liquidation or sequestration proceedings.
SARS also warned the Kaya FM host that non-payment without engaging any of those remedies could trigger further enforcement steps, including approaching third parties holding funds on her behalf and directing those funds to SARS directly.
A warrant of execution was also cited as a possibility, which would allow a sheriff to attach and sell her assets to recover what is owed.

With the debt apparently unresolved and no arrangement in place, SARS proceeded to court and obtained the default judgment. The presenter has since spoken out, confirming she is not ignoring the matter.
“Yes, I’m aware. My lawyer, accountant and SARS are dealing with it… A reversal of the judgment is pending. I’m not ducking my responsibilities as a law-abiding citizen,” Maboi said.
The former Metro FM and YFM presenter says her legal and financial team are actively engaged with SARS, and that efforts to have the judgment set aside are already under way. — MSN.
