MPILO Central Hospital yesterday launched an internship programme for Bulawayo pupils. The internship programme dubbed “Schools on the Shopfloor” will give practical experience on different jobs offered at Mpilo and encourage pupils to take up the medical profession after school.
Officially launching the programme, Mpilo chief executive officer Dr Lawrence Mantiziba said the programme was meant to open the window for pupils in terms of career guidance.
“We want children to understand how a hospital operates and have practical experience. We have 10 departments and pupils will select departments they prefer to work under,” he said.
The departments include nursing, radiography, purchase and supply and instrument maintenance.
Dr Mantiziba said the programme will become a permanent feature, which will see children from three schools benefiting each term.
“This term pupils from Mzilikazi, Sobukhazi and Northlea High School will benefit from the programme and we are doing this as part of our social responsibility,” he said.
Bulawayo provincial education director Dan Moyo commended Mpilo for taking such an initiative. He said the programme was going to complement the government’s thrust of teaching practical subjects.
Moyo challenged other institutions to emulate the work done by Mpilo saying the programme was going to change the pupils’ mindset.
Meanwhile, pupils from different schools in Bulawayo raised $1,500 which was donated to the hospital.
