IN a move aimed at giving their players more game time and competition, the Mutare Pool League (MPL) has introduced weekly midweek tournaments that will be played at the usual venues across the eastern border city.
Of late, MLP had been running the league season as well as periodic one-man tournaments.
MPL fixtures secretary, Lloyd Samanga confirmed the latest development.
“The new tournaments present an exciting opportunity for players to hone their skills and compete against a diverse range of opponents on a regular basis.
“The potential long-term benefits of the Mutare weekly tournaments lies in the development of local sports talent. By providing regular opportunities for players to compete and improve their skills, the tournaments could help to cultivate a new generation of skilled athletes and contribute to the growth of sports in the region.
“Additionally, the rotation of venues for both the weekly and Saturday tournaments could help to increase interest and participation in local sports by making events more accessible to a wider audience,” said Samanga.
The introduction of the Mutare Pool League weekly tournaments, set to start midweek next week, will have a huge impact on local sports enthusiasts and the broader community in Mutare.
Meanwhile, no major surprises are expected this weekend in the MPL where the top teams are facing average teams on Sunday.
Samanga said: “While it may be expected that the top teams will come out on top, there is always the possibility of upsets and surprises in sport.”
In a tournament co-hosted by Acid and their neighbour, Zimta Park Fantasy last week on Saturday, exceptionally talented Tatenda Chikara walked away US$140 richer for claiming pole position, while second placed, Again ‘Sir Never’ Marowero received US$90.
Samanga settled for third position, while Prosper ‘Saladic’ Muzondo weighed in fourth position and received US$60 and US$40 respectively.
