MASVINGO-BASED ZIFA Eastern Region Division One log leaders, FC WanguMazodze’ fan, Kumbirai Kanda, who died during a road accident last Sunday was laid to rest at his Rusitu rural home on Tuesday, with scores of football fans in attendance.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed Kumbirai Kanda’s death.
“The information that we have is that only one person died and the injured were taken to Chipinge District Hospital. Four of them were transferred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital where one of them has since been discharged and the remaining three are still admitted, but in stable condition,” said Inspector Muzondo.
The late Kanda was based in Masvingo and had accompanied his team to Rusitu, which apparently was his rural home.
When the accident occurred, FC WanguMazodze were on their way to Rusitu Valley where they played against Rusitu Tigers FC on Sunday.
In a condolence message, the club, wrote: “As FC WanguMazodze, we wish to express our deepest condolences to the Kanda family. We will always remember him for the sacrifices he made to support The Kingdom Boys.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kanda family during this difficult time. May his dear soul rest in eternal peace.”
The club’s Chipinge Chapter chairman, Mayor Nyakuchena led the ZhalalaZhululu delegation at the funeral.
On the same day, Mutare-based Eastern Region Division One side, Buffaloes were also involved in an accident in Marondera on their way back from a league match, but no fatalities were recorded, while some passengers were injured.
Chipinge-based ZIFA Manicaland fixtures secretary, Innocent Mlilo, who was a lone ranger on the part of local football administrators who assisted the accident victims, said: “We really want to express our appreciation for the assistance we got from our local doctors. They were really helpful and we will remain grateful for that. We commiserate with the Kanda family during this difficult time.”
