ISAAC Mpofu reaffirmed his status as one of Africa’s leading marathoners with a courageous performance at the World Athletics Championships, finishing 10th in the men’s 42,2km race and earning high praise from National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) president, Tendai Tagara.

Based at the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Fairbridge camp, Mpofu was the highest-placed Southern African in a race that saw four Africans finish in the top 10. He crossed the line in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds, less than a minute behind Tanzanian winner Alphonce Simbu, who posted a time of 2:09:48.

“Isaac Mpofu showed that he is now a hardened marathon runner,” said Tagara.

The Naaz president believes Mpofu’s preparation in Harare left him underprepared for the punishing humidity at the championships.

“If it had not been for the humidity, I think he could have secured a podium position. He was 10th in Oregon (World Championships, 2022). I am proud of his effort. In Oregon, he was right there with the leaders — this shows how strong he is,” Tagara said.

He also commended the extended Harare training camp led by coach, Benson Chauke.

“They underwent a long and demanding training period. I’m pleased with his performance — they worked hard with their coach,” he said.

Tagara expressed hope that Mpofu’s performance would attract sponsorship.

“This will help him when seeking sponsorship. Sponsors want to associate with individuals who excel on the global stage,” he said.

The Naaz chief also praised Tendai Zimuto for completing the race in extreme heat. Only 66 of the 88 starters managed to finish the marathon.

“I salute Tendai for finishing the race, just as I do Fortunate Chidzivo. I commend the entire marathon team. Some countries couldn’t even complete the race,” Tagara said.

Mpofu already holds the national record of 2:06:48, set at the Valencia Marathon in Spain in 2022. His latest time demonstrates that, with refined energy and pace management, a podium finish is well within reach.
