FOR the second year running, Mpopoma High School will have their boys as well as girls teams representing Bulawayo at the COPA Coca-Cola football tournament national finals following success at the provincial competitions held at Gifford High School.

Mpopoma High School boys celebrate after beating Msiteli 1-0 in the COPA Coca-Cola Bulawayo final

A day after their girls team dismantled Magwegwe 3-1 on Thursday in the final at Gifford to book a place in the national competition to be held in Kadoma, Friday was the turn of the boys to do the same when they saw off Msiteli 1-0 at the same venue to also secure a place at the nationwide event.

Shingai Chimoyo struck the solitary strike for Mpopoma which made the difference in the final against Msiteli, a team they had beaten in the Mzilikazi district final at the beginning of June. The Bekezela Mpofu captained Mpopoma needed a penalty shootout to get the better of Gifford in the semifinal in a match which had ended 0-0 in regulation time. Mpopoma prevailed 6-5 in sudden death to set up a final clash with Msiteli who had beaten St Bernard’s 1-0 in the other semifinal fixture.

It was a tightly contested final until Chimoyo struck in the second half to send the Babson Ngwenya mentored Mpopoma to the national finals to be staged in Kadoma from 11 to 13 July.
