THE battle for supremacy at the Mr Sinkwa Junior League Soccer Tournament is underway at Gifford High School in Bulawayo.
As part of their ongoing drive to uplift grassroots sport, Mr Sinkwa seconded former footballers Joel “Josta” Ngodzo and Nkululeko “MaRoe” Dube to coach 12 primary schools around the city. The initiative kicked off in late May and is now building to a thrilling climax.
The 12 schools were grouped into three clusters. The Pumula Cluster included Godlwayo, Dumezweni, Ngwegwe and Mabambeni. The Mzilikazi Cluster featured Mzilikazi Primary, Lozikeyi, Lotshe and Lobengula. The final group included McKeurtan, Induba, Emakhandeni and St Patrick’s.
Ngodzo and Dube ran coaching sessions for both boys’ and girls’ teams, generating so much excitement that the Mr Sinkwa team decided to host a full scale tournament.
Preliminary knockout rounds were held earlier this month to determine the top teams for the finals. Boys’ matches took place at Godlwayo, Mzilikazi and McKeurtan, while the girls’ games were played at Mabambeni and Sotshangane Grounds.
In the boys’ category, Emakhandeni, Godlwayo, Ngwegwe and Lotshe advanced to the finals. For the girls, coaches selected all star squads rather than individual school teams. Emakhandeni Select, Pumula Select, Mzilikazi Select and Coaches Select will battle it out for the title.
