Mr Ugly contest set for Beitbridge

Aerowise Entertainment, Beitbridge’s experts in entertainment, will this year host the fourth edition of the Mr Ugly contest to select Zimbabwe’s ugliest man. The event is scheduled to take place at Pagomo Heights Leisure Centre in the next two weeks with organisers saying they are yet to agree on a specific date.

The show will be held for the fourth time after the previous three shows were successful, drawing an average 30 men who volunteered to outclass each other to crown Zimbabwe’s ugliest man.

Show organiser Lovemore Chonzi said that by late last week they had registered eight contestants from Harare, Bulawayo, Gwanda and Beitbridge.

“We are looking at having between 12 and 15 contestants and I believe we are still on course,” said Chonzi.
He said last year’s winner William Masvinu had also expressed interest in participating in this year’s event.
Chonzi said preliminary shows for Zvishavane, Gwanda and Masvingo had resumed after they were suspended to pave way for the general elections and the UNWTO General Assembly. He said the road shows would be used to select contestants for the main event.
He said the contest will be held under the theme, “A watch word for the wise”.

Chonzi said they could not hold the show last year because there were many people who wanted to hijack their idea by holding bogus pageants under the banner of Mr Ugly.

“On the eve of the pageant we will host a men’s bring-a-braai-pack party at the same venue,” he said.
Chonzi could not disclose the prize money saying it would only be availed to the shortlisted contestants, lest the show could be hijacked.

He added that the pageant was being held under the guidance of a new committee chaired by businessman Mr Hudson Mhlanga which had availed a lot of resources for them to conduct road shows.  Previously the team was led by Mr Dominic Gwatirisa.
Chonzi said they were also engaging a number of media houses with a view to popularising the event which has become an annual event in Beitbridge town. He said interested participants should contact him on 0773 431 322.

The list of judges, he said, was still being finalised. In the previous contests women dominated the judges’ panel.
Chonzi added that the pageant will have four categories which were still being finalised. The previous contests had four categories including; casual, smart casual, safari and sports.

He said besides hosting the Mr Ugly pageant, Aerowise Entertainment has resurrected Beitbridge’s night life with their popular Pagomo Heights being a place to be for most revellers and visitors to the border town every weekend.
“We are always playing host to a number of artistes, dance groups and holding pool tournaments at Pagomo Leisure Centre as we try to improve people’s social life around this town,” he said.
