MSU coach John Phiri successfully plotted the defeat of his former paymasters as his charges snatched a winner at the death against log leaders Shabanie Mine in a Central Soccer League fixture played at the university campus at the weekend.
The Varsity Sharks scored through Bastos Chihohwa in the 86th minute to halt the asbestos miners’ six-match winning streak.
The win catapulted MSU into the top three with 16 points from eight games. They are tied with Tongogara, who have a superior goal difference.
Tongogara were held to a goalless draw by Vumbachikwe, leaving them two points adrift of Shabanie Mine.
Phiri was over the moon with the victory and declared that his charges had the pedigree to withstand the heat to challenge for the championship.
“I’m happy with the performance of the boys and this comes after a change of attitude in most of the boys. We are now spoilt for choice and I knew we were going to win and just took it as another game,” said Phiri.
“The win will go a long way in boosting confidence in the boys and hopefully we will go all the way and gain promotion this season.”
Elsewhere, Gweru United notched their first win of the season by edging ZRP Beitbridge 1-0 at Ascot Stadium.
Jessie Mine also tasted their first victory by dismissing former Premiership side Whawha 2-0.
