MSU to produce sex centred film

STUDENTS from the Midlands State University Health Services department are set to produce a film centred on sexual reproductive health issues.
Theatre ensemble — Savanna Trust — has been tasked to direct the film which has a script written by the students to empower fellow youths.

Acting director of health services, Tafirenyika Shoko, said the department had come up with the initiative to reach out to students at the institution and the nation at large.

“The film will touch on issues to do with sexual reproductive health in adolescents who form the majority of our students. The idea is to package information that’s relevant in that stage of their life so that they can be able to make informed decisions,” said Shoko.”

Shoko said the film would be shot later this month and is expected to be released early next year. Once complete, the film will be distributed to other tertiary institutions. It will also be released to members of the public.

Other than the film, the institution is also in the process of negotiating with prominent award-winning music producer Oskid whom they want to produce a music album with talented students.

The efforts by MSU come at a time when statistics from the National Aids Council (Nac) show that higher and tertiary education institutions have the highest rate of new HIV and Aids infections in the country.

According to statistics from Nac, the number of new infections stands at 86 708.

The organisation is now advocating for mainstreaming of HIV and Aids in the tertiary institutions’ curricula.
