According to the organisers, “the beast is coming to share his journey in rugby at the Cottco Schools Festival” tomorrow.
Prince Edward sports director, Sebastian Garikai, who is the organiser of the festival, said Mtawarira has confirmed that he will be at the festival.
“We are happy that Mtawarira has confirmed that he is coming to share his journey with us and we feel it’s a good thing,” said Garikai.
“Most of the rugby players are now calling themselves ‘Beast’ but they do don’t know him so we believe his presence will benefit many players.
“Mtawarira’s career started here in Zimbabwe and he used to play at the Cottco festival so if he tells his story and experiences , I am sure the up-and-coming Cottco top players will be able to learn from that.”
Mtawarira attended Churchill Boys High School for five years before being given a full scholarship at Peterhouse.
While he was at Churchill, at 15, he was spotted by legendary Zimbabwean coach, Joey Muwadzuri who invited him to join the Under-19 side at the National Schools Festival.
Later that year coach Joey invited him to be part of Cats and Dogs Rugby Academy Team that won the National Seniors Sevens tournament.
He played alongside Daniel Hondo, Pete Bernade and Tonderai “Kawaza” Chavhanga, among others.
Despite his young age he used his strength to good use and looked a part among the big boys.
Having settled in South Africa, he was drafted into the Springboks’ squad where he has made a huge impact.
His impact was significant, he had two long distance runs with the ball. He went on to be a part of the starting line-up for all the subsequent Tri-nations tests.
Coca-Cola Franchise Brand Manager, Mona Karingi, said Mtawarira will give the schoolboys a lot of good tips about the game.
The Beast’s trip to Harare is being sponsored by Coca-Cola.
“The South Africa-based international rugby star will give the youth some tips on performing at the highest level,
“We believe he is a role model for the aspiring rugby players and the youth in general. They will benefit by spending the day with him,” said Karingi.
